Farmerville council passes a $300 raise

FARMERVILLE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - How many of you would like to give yourself a pay-raise?Well, the Farmerville's Town Council is giving itself a 40 percent pay-raise.

At a December meeting, council members believed the town was big enough to pay them a larger monthly check. It was a vote of three-to-two to up their pay from $700 a month to a $1,000.

Resident Linda McMichael doesn't think that is right.

"I don't think anyone should have it were they can decide to give themselves a raise. We would all like to give ourselves a raise. But that's just not logical to me," McMichael said.

Of the five person council, Mayor Pro-tem Gerome Nation and Council Members Wayne Jones and Caroline Gatson voted for the raise.

Nation and Jones did not return our calls and Gatson refused to comment

Councilmen Lavelle Maine and Jerry Taylor voted no. Maine said he is too sick with the flu to comment and Taylor said he just doesn't think the raise is needed.

"For our size town, I think it is too much," Taylor said.

The council voted on the raise during a special called meeting on the budget. The mayor says the raise will not hurt Farmerville because the town is in good financial standings.

Taylor agrees.

"The town of Farmerville is in good condition, financially. But again I'll say, I just voted my conviction," Taylor said.

McMichael says the money could have been used better.

"We have policemen that could probably use a raise, because I'm sure they don't make near what they need to. We could use this money better to develop parking in the downtown area and build the downtown area before it becomes a ghost town," McMichael said.

The council also voted to give themselves $100 extra for each special meeting called.
