POINTE-AUX-CHENES, La. (AP) - Residents of the Pointe-aux-Chenes community can expect improvements in drainage in 2014 as levee officials clean Bayou Pointe-aux-Chenes.

Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes along with the Terrebonne Levee District and South Lafourche Levee District will pay a total of $270,000 to sweep bottom materials from the bayou later this year.

Terrebonne Parish Levee District Director Reggie Dupre says permits were obtained to clean the bayou in the early 2000s, but the hurricanes of 2005 and 2008 put a halt on the project.

He says rainwater in yards of residents near the bayou eventually drains into the waterway. Cleaning out the waterway will help it drain more quickly, he says.
