SALLIS, Miss. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Authorities in Attala County say a 12 year-old girl is recovering after a male student set her hair on fire with a cigarette lighter.

Attala County Schools Superintendent Bryan Weaver says the incident took place at Long Creek Elementary School on Tuesday.

Weaver says one boy brought the lighter to school and another used it to set the girl's hair on fire in a hallway.

A teacher extinguished the fire, and the girl was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Weaver says the school has surveillance video that shows the incident wasn't an accident.

He says the two students could be expelled for the incident when the school board reviews it.

The Attala County Sheriff's Department has turned the case over to youth court.
