MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The Ouachita Parish School Board is taking steps toward constructing a new middle school and renovating other schools on the eastern side of the parish.

The board has called a special meeting Thursday to announce its intent to consider calling an election to sell property bonds in the East Ouachita School District.

In February, the board will formally consider whether to place the matter on the May ballot.

Ouachita Superintendent Bob Webber said the tax could generate an additional $28 million without voters paying amounts higher than are currently assessed.

Plans are to use $13 million to $15 million of the proceeds to construct a middle school in Swartz to serve students from Swartz Upper Elementary and a portion of the students who attend Lakeshore Elementary.
