MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The local O negative and B negative blood supply levels have dropped sharply this week, resulting in an immediate and urgent need for additional blood donors in order to continue to avoid a critical situation.

"Unfortunately, the trend we've been seeing since early December has continued and without donors coming forward it will quickly become a critical situation for our area. As a nation, we are also presented with the additional problem of extreme weather preventing donors from giving in many areas. This creates just one more reason why we need stability in the local supply," says Tina Hooper, spokesperson for LifeShare Blood Centers.

People who are possibly eligible to give blood and know they have an O negative or B negative blood type are needed immediately. Persons who are unaware of their blood type are also being asked to donate now, as it will be tested upon collection. Donations of all blood types are needed for constant replenishing, but O negative and B negative are the only two types approaching critical.

O negative is the universal donor, meaning that all blood types can receive O negative blood. O negative blood is needed for transfusions where the patient's blood type is not known or is O negative. Blood transfusions are a part of many life-saving treatments, including those for trauma incidents, blood disorders, and cancer among many others.

The following LifeShare Blood Centers' locations are open for blood donations along with several mobile blood drives in the area. To locate a mobile blood drive, make an appointment, or for more information call your nearest center or go to www.lifeshare.org.

Give blood at a LifeShare center or at a mobile blood drive in the area. Call your local center or go to www.lifeshare.org for hours and blood drive locations.
