FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The cold wave gripping the eastern half of the country has thwarted a prison escape.

An inmate slipped out of a minimum security facility in Kentucky on Sunday. But with wind chills hitting 20 below yesterday, Lexington police say Robert Vick walked into a motel and asked the clerk to call police.

The 42-year-old said he wanted to turn himself in because it was just too cold for a getaway. The Department of Corrections says Vick would have been dressed in prison-issued khaki pants, a shirt and a jacket when he escaped.
