JACKSON, Miss. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Some places in Mississippi could set daily record cold temperatures Monday as winter weather grips a large portion of the country.

Daniel Lamb, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, says temperatures Monday night could be as low as 5 degrees in the northern part of the state and the middle teens in south Mississippi.

Lamb says some daily temperature records could be broken, but he said these temperatures won't break monthly records for January.

On Tuesday, temperatures should be a little higher than Monday, with highs ranging from the 20s in north Mississippi to the upper 30s in south Mississippi.

One good thing, Lamb says, is the winds should not be as strong on Tuesday, which should cut down on the wind chill factor.
