Interim Jackson County Sheriff sworn in

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Charles Britt, a former major with the Biloxi Police Department, has been sworn is as interim sheriff of Jackson County.

Britt was sworn in Tuesday morning at the Board of Supervisors' regular meeting.

He will serve as interim sheriff until a special election can be held in November to replace former Sheriff Mike Byrd, who pleaded guilty to federal and state charges and resigned last year.

The supervisors voted unanimously to appoint Britt.

In comments, Supervisors Mike Mangum, Melton Harris Jr. and John McKay said Britt was not their top choice, but all said he is fully qualified and wished him well in the new position.

Britt, of Vancleave, was one of four finalists selected from a pool of 22 candidates.
