Monroe Zoo needs contractors to finish upgrades

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo is continuing to work toward meeting U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection standards, but some of the major construction has yet to begin.

A USDA inspection in July found the zoo needed to change parts of its primate enclosure and remodel the kitchen where the animals' food is prepared.

Zoo Director Joe Clawson says while zoo workers have done the repairs they can make and he hasn't found a contractor interested in taking on some of the major work, particularly the kitchen.

All surfaces in the kitchen must be stainless steel. The current cabinets and countertops are 50 years old.
