New Orleans freeze plan in effect

Posted: Updated:

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - With two frigid nights on the way, New Orleans' city government says its freeze plan is in effect: All shelters will be open free of charge to people who need to get out of the cold.

A news release says that, starting at 4 p.m. Sunday, men and women seeking shelter will be accepted at the New Orleans Mission and Salvation Army. It says Ozanam Inn will take males only. Covenant House will take anyone between the ages of 16 and 21, their dependent children, and any woman or girl with dependent minor children. Mothers with small children may come any time.

The city says everyone should take precautions to protect themselves from the cold. It encourages people to check on neighbors and the elderly.
