Carnival season kicks off Monday

Monroe, La (KNOE 8 News) - The firework stands are just packing up from the New Year, but another celebration will begin Monday. It's the kick-off of carnival season leading up to Mardi Gras and ash Wednesday. And the Krewe of Janus is getting ready to roll out but they need the entire community's support to let the good times roll.

The annual Krewe of Janus Mardi Gras parade will roll through the twin cities on Feb. 15., and Steve Courteau said preparations are underway.

"There is a lot of work that goes into the floats making sure they are safe, secure and the lights are working properly so everyone can have a great time during the parade," Courteau said.

The parade only happens one night a year, but it takes 12-months to plan it. And Courteau said the Krewe is always looking for extra support.

"The Krewe of Janus is an all-volunteer organization, so the Krewe has been working all year on fundraisers to put the parade on so the people of the area can enjoy it," Courteau said.

Courteau said most people don't realize the amount of money that goes into the parade. The Krewe pays for the beads, for the bands and to promote the annual event.

Courteau also said the Krewe is currently selling T-shirts and cookbooks to pay for the parade. They accept new members from the public and organizations are encouraged to enter floats.

"The biggest thing we have right now is of course the ‘Texas Hold-em' and we are actually hoping that some people will be interested in coming to the ball and celebrating Mardi Gras with us."

Courteau says all the work is worth it because more than 100,000people attend the one-night event which brings a lot of money into the twin cities.
