Tips to accomplish your New Year’s Resolution

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) – Scott Shelby is a licensed professional counselor who makes his living helping people accomplish their goals. A lot of us in the Arklamiss have big dreams, which means a big change. In order to be successful Shelby says we should take smaller steps.

"Sometimes we have too high of goals. Sometimes goals are unrealistic and unattainable," said Scott Shelby.

There's no secret to success. If you want to stop smoking like Cherri or lose weight like David, your chances increase if you don't keep your goal a secret either.

"Writing down a goal, the likelihood of you being successful with that goal dramatically increases. Telling someone about it, having a spouse or a friend or a co-worker holding you accountable to the goals that you are setting really increases the likelihood that you will be successful with your goals," said Shelby.

Only eight percent of people are successful in accomplishing their New Year's Resolution. Experts say that number could be a lot higher if we found joy in the journey and recognized the progress we are making.

"Reward yourself. If you're goal is to lose 50 pounds and after you've lost ten, reward yourself. Give yourself a pat on the back for moving closer towards your goal. That is going to help you stay focused and stay motivated to complete that goal," said Shelby.

When we know better we do better. 2014 can be our year to see the results we want, if we follow some of the doctors' orders.

Professional counselors want everyone to know that it's okay if you slip-up occasionally because our goals are accomplished by determination and dusting ourselves off when we fall and get back up.
