Mayo focuses on community outreach

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo is beginning the New Year with a community outreach effort. He says he'll go into the different neighborhoods of Monroe, to talk to community members, hear their complaints and also about the things that are going well.

Over on the south side of Monroe, in the Booker T. Washington neighborhood, Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo and some department members knocked on doors, talked with residents and installed smoke detectors. This is all a part of the mayor's community outreach program.

Neighborhood resident Ray Presley said the city government is doing okay, but his community really needs more police and they need to help kids get to school safely.

"It's raining. It's cold. We need something out there for those kids to stand in. It's dark and dangerous," Presley said.

Over by St. Frederick High School, the mayor and crew continued their neighborhood tour.

Stanley Lamborte said the police department is doing a great job. He says his biggest issue is the trash.

"We put them bags out about two weeks and they haven't got picked up. That is really the only issue except for cutting the grass, to make the city look good," Lamborte said.

The mayor says both criticism and praise are welcome in his new grass roots initiative.

"In order to continue to grow and expand, we are asking our citizens here in the city of Monroe to become more engaged in our community, In every aspect of government that we have," Mayo said.

Lamborte says he is glad to see the mayor out and about in his neighborhood, especially considering how busy the mayor is.

Presley also says the outreach initiative is a good thing, but time will tell how long the practice will continue.

Presley also says of the mayor could learn a lot by visiting all the neighborhoods.

Mayo says some of his outreach initiatives also include meetings at community centers, walking town meetings and other activities to be announced throughout the year.
