TUPELO, Miss. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Two police officers in Tupelo are in critical condition after being shot by a suspect described as "heavily armed."

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal says the shooting occurred Monday in a neighborhood near the Atlanta Bread Company parking lot as the officers were in or near their car, pursuing a suspect in a bank robbery of the BancorpSouth branch in Gloster Creek Village.

Witnesses tell investigators a man approached the officers and shot them at point-blank range. They said at least one of the officers was shot in the head.

City spokeswoman Sarah Robinson says both officers were taken to North Mississippi Medical Center for treatment. Their names haven't been released.

Authorities are searching for multiple suspects in a white Yukon sport utility vehicle and a gray Isuzu SUV.
