The Phil fallout continues

Posted: Updated:

Monroe, La (KNOE 8 News) - The Phil Robertson fall out continues. With the future of the hit reality television show in the balance, a new video of Phil preaching has surfaced. While it seems he is merely quoting the Bible, some are saying it is hate speech.

But what does all this controversy mean for us, those who live here in the twin cities?

It was only few years ago that West Monroe and Monroe were basically unknown.

But now, the twin cities are directly linked to all things Duck Dynasty, more specifically, the Robertson family

And their presence is strong with the Duck Commander Warehouse, the dinner and the newest business venture, Duck and Dressing

People come from all over to see the reality stars and spend cash. But with all this controversy, will the hype and the spending wane? Monroe Chamber of Commerce President, Sue Nicholson, doesn't think so.

"The Roberstons have come too far to go into obscurity, I just don't see that. Look at Miley Cyrus and what happened to her and she has done just the opposite," Nicholson said.

Alana Cooper with the West Monroe Convention and Visitors Bureau said the number of visitors to the area, and interest shown online, has been steadily climbing since the reality show debuted.

She doesn't see that changing.  But, if the show is canceled, she says people will still come.

"We will continue to be associated with them. Those people who disagree with it, they are not going to come and they don't watch the show, and that is the right of every American. And as far as us distancing ourselves or doing anything like that … no," Copper said.

Nicholson said the Robertsons are committed to this community and she is thankful for their support. But, she says Phil's comments don't reflect everyone's opinions.

"While we don't support and wouldn't support the position Phil has, we are a little more tolerant than that, we certainly respect his right to free speech," Nicholson said.

And both Nicholson and Cooper agree, the beards have really brought in the bucks.

The West Monroe Chamber of Commerce also released a statement today supporting Phil and the family.

And, the video of Phil preaching that just surfaced online is at least two years old.
