The fallout from Phil

Posted: Updated:

WEST MONROE, La (KNOE 8 News) - Look around just about everywhere, because seemingly everyone has an opinion on Phil Robertson's comments to a national magazine and A&E suspending him from the smash reality show.

It's been sparking controversy on our very own Facebook page and website and around town is no different.

People have strong reactions to the duck commander's latest headline.

Nell Hargrave and a friend drove in from Mississippi just to show their support for what they say is Phil Robertson's freedom of speech.

"I got upset and came to show my support for everyone's freedom of speech that has been fought for by so many people and we all need to stand up for it," Hargrave said.

They brought signs along with them. One read: "Phil for president" and the other said, "Phil has rights too."  They showed them off in the car, at the Duck Commander Warehouse and even displayed them on the table while they ate at Willie's Duck Dinner

The Robertson family has attended the White Ferry Church of Christ for decades. Senior Pastor Mike Kellett said he believes they will come out of this controversy unharmed.

"I thought one of the things he said that was excellent. We don't show disrespect for anyone that is different but we love everyone," Kellett said.

But there are other opinions.

The NAACP and Human Rights Campaign sent an open letter to A&E, stating Robertson's remarks were racial and homophobic. They say the remarks are not only dangerous, but inaccurate.

But Hargrave said Phil's rights are the same as everyone else's.

"I would say to them, whatever their beliefs are. They have the right to say them and no one should show any hard feelings toward them," Hargrave said.

Just this past weekend Phil commented on the family's quick rise to fame.

"Well, I've come a long way around here; from fishing the river to this. Only in America man," Robertson said.

Only time will tell how long that fame will last, with or without, the original duck commander.
