LEBANON, Pa. (CBS News) - A central Pennsylvania minister who officiated at the same-sex marriage of his son in Massachusetts has been defrocked by the United Methodist Church.

Church officials say the Rev. Frank Schaefer of Lebanon met with a panel Thursday morning to follow up on the recent trial and 30-day suspension for officiating at the wedding of his son in violation of the denomination's rules.

That suspension was ordered after the trial board ruled he violated the denomination's Book of Discipline, which prohibits its clergy from officiating at same-sex weddings.

Church spokesman John Coleman says the church panel's follow-up meeting with Schaefer was brief: "When asked to surrender his credentials as required by the verdict, he refused to do so. Therefore, because of his decision, the board was compelled by the jury's decision to deem his credentials surrendered."

Schaefer said he could not follow the Book of Discipline because, in his view, it was discriminatory against gay people.

He had also said he would not voluntarily surrender his credentials. He was expected to address his future at a press conference later this afternoon.
