Christmas for the animals at the zoo

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Christmas is a week away and several organizations are collecting toys and gifts for kids in need. The Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo is reminding people that the animals they care for are in need as well.

The director of the zoo Joe Clawson says a majority of the items they are looking for can be found in your cupboards like peanut butter and tuna fish. You can also go through your closet and donate old shoes because it gives animals like monkey's something new to explore. The animals also like perfume because it helps stimulate their senses and as a result the animals are a lot more active making a trip to the zoo more enjoyable.

There are several different locations throughout the city of Monroe that are collecting items for the zoo where there are Christmas ornaments on their tree that you can choose from. There are a lot of animals at the zoo and this Christmas the employees want to help them enjoy their habitat's a little more.

There are five locations in Monroe where you can drop off supplies and gifts for the zoo:

1) Neville High School

2) St. Frederick High School

3) Community Trust Bank located at North 18th Street

4) Iberia Bank located at the intersection of Oliver and Tower Drive.

5) Washington Plaza
