Franklin Parish School installs cameras

Posted: Updated:

WINNSBORO, La. (KNOE8 NEWS) - We hear about it all the time, school violence. Some parents even hesitate to send their kids to school.

Just last week, there was another school shooting in Colorado. And locally, we had a scare after a woman left a suspicious package at an Ouachita Parish School.

Fortunately, some schools are taking extra precautions. Franklin Parish High School is joining the growing list of schools that are using cameras to keep kids safe.

Sixteen-year-old Sarah Harper lives in a world many of us didn't while going to school. She witnesses bullying that goes way beyond teasing, fighting and even gun violence

"It's scary, it is; you worry about your safety. Is anything going to happen?

Harper is a junior at Franklin Parish High School where Principal Pat Sartin installed more than 50 operational cameras throughout the school.

"The issues we have now days, it is sad that you have to do that in a school setting, but you have to protect the children as best you can," Sartin said.

Sartin can sit at her desk and view the cameras on a monitor. She says safety may be their first priority ... but the cameras have more than one use.

"It's good for us to go back and look at student behavior. It's good for teachers.to use for professional growth, how their teaching is coming across. They can always view that. We have retrieved a lot of lost, (quote, un-quote) stuff that students report have been lost."

There's also a secure door in the lobby that no one can get through without being let in.

Harper said the extra security measures were needed.

"Now that they have them, it's less fights. If someone was to be taken, you know who did it. You see who skips class. Miss Sartin knows everything now," Harper said.

Harper said there has been some backlash with students, but she understands the need for the cameras.

Right now, Sartin is working with the Franklin Parish Sheriff's Office. She says they hope to have access to the security cameras within the next month.
