Kisatchie getting thousands of pines

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The Kisatchie National Forest is getting new pine seedlings at a rate of more than 4,000 a day.

U.S. Forest Service technician Ched Fontenot was planting earlier this week at a site along Louisiana Highway 117 in Natchitoches Parish. It had been mostly cleared a few years ago for lumber, but not completely. Many longleaf trees remain to provide seeds.

Restoring Kisatchie's the native plant population is part of the reason to use the longleaf species, Fontenot tells The Town Talk.

Longleaf is very adaptive to fire, he says.
