JACKSON, Miss. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Doctors at the University of Mississippi Medical Center have transplanted both a kidney and pancreas into a 49-year-old diabetes patient.

UMMC officials say the operation was performed Dec. 5. The patient has not been identified.

It's the hospital's first pancreas transplant in addition to being the first pancreas-kidney transplant.

UMMC says in a news release that the patient is expected to return home this week or next.

Dr. Mark Earl says the transplant means the man should not have to continue daily dialysis and insulin therapy.

UMMC says the patient has coped with Type 1 diabetes since childhood, which resulted in his kidneys failing. Even so, doctors say he took very good care of himself, making him a good candidate for transplant.
