30k people expected at Commander Christmas in Monroe

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) – Christmas is coming early to Northeast Louisiana thanks to local celebrities and the stars of the hit show Duck Dynasty. There will be a day full of events at the Rivermarket in Monroe and as Nolan Crane reports preparations are being made for more than 30-thousand people to attend.

People are coming to Northeast Louisiana from all across the country and checking into hotels to spend Christmas at the Rivermarket in downtown Monroe.

"We've got people coming all the way from California, from Connecticut, all parts of the US," said Jeffrey Neighbors.

And rooms are filling up fast

"Right now we've got 120 of our rooms rented so we only have a few left, especially for Saturday, that's our biggest night when everything is taking place. That's when everyone is coming in and staying that night," said Neighbors.

More than 30,000 people are expected to be in Monroe to spend Christmas with the Robertsons of duck dynasty fame.

"We're receiving calls from all over the united states with people driving you know 14 hours plus to get here to bring their kids or their families to see this event,' said Myra Gatling-Akers.

Parking at the Rivermarket is limited so organizers have arranged Monroe transit buses and trolleys to pick people up at the Monroe Civic Center, Forsythe Park, campus of ULM and Hudson Lane near downtown every 15 minutes and it won't cast any money to catch a ride to the Rivermarket.

The events start at ten a-m with more than 250 booths set up at the Rivermarket. At two o'clock there is a look-a-like contest where the family will judge the winners. There is a rubber duck derby contest at 3:30. Then a flotilla boat parade at 5:30 and the last event is a laser show which begins at 7pm.
