Ouachita Parish full of celebrities, holiday cheer

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La (KNOE 8 News) - On Saturday Morning, the festivities began with the annual Bawcomville  Redneck Christmas Parade.

A camo clad "Uncle Si" Robertson led the many big trucks, four-wheelers and even a dumpster float down the streets.

As with tradition, candy and turnip green were thrown to crowd.

Eight-year-old Jonathan Turner said he didn't care about the cold weather.

"I wanted to come see Santa and get beads and toys and candy and all kinds of stuff. I don't care if it is cold. I don't care if it is snowing, raining, whatever, I am getting candy," Jonathan said.

Over on the other side of the river, the Northeast Delta African American Heritage Museum hosted its holiday brunch fundraiser.

At the Monroe Civic Center, the semi-formal brunch featured local entertainers, jazz music, a silent auction, and of course, a buffet full of breakfast food.

Executive Director Lorraine Slacks said the annual event helps support the museum.

"It helps us with our programs throughout the year. We provide programs for the youth and elderly. We work hard to make sure everyone understands the contributions that African Americans have made to the world in art and music and cultural things," Slacks said.

Over in the civic center's arena, you could also hear jazz music.

Due to the threat of wintry weather, the Downtown River Market moved indoors and had the entertainment of the LA Land orchestra. Many activities were scheduled, including a pet parade, children's parade, and a meet and greet with Santa.

After Santa finished up at the river market, he must have made a trip back across the river.

He was spotted rolling down Antique Alley in the annual Kiwanis Christmas parade.

But it was another star, a Duck Dynasty star who drew in the crowd. Kay Robertson and country singer Chancie Neal headlined the parade that went through both Downtown West Monroe and Downtown Monroe.

To add to all the celebrities out and about in the twin cities, Sarah Palin was over at Books-A-Million signing her Christmas book, "Good Tidings and Great Joy."

More than 700 people stood in line, some outside in the 30 degree weather, just to meet the republican figure and have her sign the book.

But Palin's book signing wasn't the last of the day.

The cold didn't stop some from wrapping it all up on the river front, to watch the fireworks. Next Saturday should be just as action packed, and celebrity packed, with the Downtown River Market's A Very Merry Commander Christmas.
