Operation Santa patrol, keeping you safe this holiday season

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Guys in jeans and sweatshirts may look like your average shoppers wandering around the mall looking for holiday gifts.

But with the simple lift of their jacket, you find out quickly they aren't here for gifts.

"We are with the Ouachita Parish Sheriffs office we are doing Santa Patrol and coming through the stores to make sure nobody shop lifts we check with the clerks and managers" says Crain.

They're looking for thieves.

Lieutenant David Crain along with 9 others are all members of the Ouachita Parish S.C.A.T. team but during the holiday season they're on operation Santa patrol.

"This time of the year is where most of your crime starts happening during the Christmas time people are in a bind for money and they know everyone is out shopping" says Crain.

The team rides around in unmarked vehicles and wear regular clothes. Hitting everything from walmart to gas stations alerting store owners and trying to reduce crime.

"People do more when they don't see a police presence and if they are going to commit a crime they are more likely to do it when they don't think the police is around" says Crain.

So remember you never know who is standing right beside you.
