NEW ORLEANS (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The New Orleans City Council is expected to reopen debate this week on a question that many thought had been decided almost three years ago: How big should the city's jail be?

After months of divisive hearings during 2010, city officials decided to cap the number of jail beds at 1,438.

The trouble is, even after two buildings are complete, they will lack certain basics that inmate advocates say are necessary, including mental health facilities.

The New Orleans Advocate reports a council committee is scheduled to take up a motion on Tuesday allowing the sheriff to continue operating one of the existing jail facilities that were supposed to close when the new buildings are ready.
