RICHWOOD, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The people of Richwood are now without a police department.

The newly appointed fiscal administrator made the decision to shut the doors to the department, leaving the employees without jobs, right here at the start of the holiday season.

This morning, when employees with the Richwood Police Department arrived at work, they found envelopes with their names on them. Inside the envelopes, they found a letter. The letter says as of midnight on Thanksgiving, they no longer have a job.

Today I spoke with patrol officer Pamela Gales who said she is sad and disappointed about all of this.

"They never did warn us so we could make some attempts to get our personal affairs in orders or see what we could do with that," Gales said.

The letter says the newly appointed fiscal administrator Jonald Walker made the decision to close the department because of the town's debt issues.

However, the letter was signed by the Police Chief Euckle Hunter. Both Walker and Chief Hunter declined to comment.

The Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office will now patrol the area.

For Gales, today is business as usual. She is finishing up her reports.

"I owe it to the citizens, they need their information. It is a crash report so I wouldn't dare leave that undone. That would be unfair to the people that were involved," Gales said.

The police department will be closed in Richwood until further notice. And although Walker declined to comment today, he did say he would speak with the media next week. Hopefully we can get more answers then.

We also reached out to the mayor of Richwood, but were unable to get a comment.

We're told if there's an emergency, people in Richwood should call 911 or the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office.

RICHWOOD, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Just after Noon today, employees of the Richwood Police Dept. received a second letter, stating that they would be terminated as of midnight Wednesday night.

It's unclear whether the letter was sent from the Fiscal Administrator for the town or from the police chief.

KNOE 8 News reporter Lacey Sharp will be live from the Richwood Police Department and is searching for answers. She'll have more at 5 and 6 on KNOE 8 News.
