Taxpayers upset with Monroe City Council decision

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)-Tax payers took to the podium at Tuesday nights Monroe City Council meeting as they spoke out before council took a vote regarding an ordinance giving the council 150,000 dollars.

Although the ordinance passed not everyone agreed with the decision.

"So I didn't feel it was necessary" says Councilwoman Gretchen Ezernack.

The money would come from excess sales tax and go towards a number of things for the council.

Such as legal council, travel, and salary increases.

"We are always adding to the administrations budget and others budgets but we never ask for anything for ourselves as a council this is the first council that has had the opportunity but not just the opportunity but the wherewithal to stand up and appropriate money so that we can do things" says Councilman Eddie Clark.

But Eznerack just doesn't agree because she believes it goes against the charter.

"The charter specifically says that the city attorney represents the council along with the administration" says Ezernack.
