UPDATE:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - On November 19, 2013, at 9:46 a.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a two vehicle fatal crash on Louisiana Highway 2 west of Louisiana Highway 143.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice, driven by 34-year-old Darren Walker of Gibsland, was traveling east on Louisiana Highway 2 when it crossed the center line and struck a 2011 Toyota truck, driven by 62-year-old Eldridge Bennett of Sterlington, head on that was traveling west on Louisiana Highway 2.

Walker suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Union Parish Coroner's Office. Bennett suffered moderate injuries and was taken to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. Walker and Bennett were both wearing their seat belts. The passenger in the Chevrolet, 34-year-old Laquita Johnson of Bastrop, was not wearing her seat belt, suffered serious injuries and was taken to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport.

Impairment is not suspected. Toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving. Never drive a motor vehicle when impaired or fatigued. Always remain buckled up while in a vehicle, regardless of seating position. Avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver's attention away from the road and always obey the speed limit.

Troop F has investigated 40 fatal crashes which have resulted in 48 deaths so far this year.
