Monroe taxes pass soundly

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A bond measure and several other propositions were passed in the City of Monroe in Saturday's election.

For the city's Special School District, any bonds that are issued over a 20 year period would not exceed $59 million, and be used for upkeep of school-related facilities for city schools.

A proposition to continue a Monroe city special property tax through the year 2023 for the city's recreational facilities passed. About $734,000 would be collected per year, over a ten year period.

A tax continuation to help with public safety services passed. About $414,000 dollars would be collected each year, over a ten-year period.

A continuation of a special tax to help operate and maintain drainage services in the city passed. An estimated $512,000 per year would be collected, over a ten year period.

A vote on a Monroe City charter amendment on term limits to three consecutive terms for city council members passed. This applies to council members elected after the 2012 election.

Lastly, a Monroe City charter amendment to limit the mayor to three consecutive terms received 78% of the vote.
