5th District Congressional runoff election today

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Voters in the 5th district are choosing the newest member of Louisiana's congressional delegation in a special runoff election to fill the seat vacated by Rodney Alexander.
The two republican candidates, Vance McAllister and state Senator Neil Riser, tell KNOE they are ready for today's election.

McAllister is largely self-funded, running as a political outsider with backing from members of the popular "Duck Dynasty" TV family. Riser is running on his experience in the Legislature and has the support of tea party groups.

Their strongest disagreement is on President Barack Obama's signature health care law. While both candidates say they would vote to repeal the law. Riser says that's the best option for citizens, while McAllister says repeal has no chance with Democrats leading the Senate and White House, so he says Congress should work to improve the law.

Polls close at 8 p.m.
