Veteran's Weekend kicks off

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Hundreds of Veterans are honored Friday to kick off the Veterans Day weekend.

"A hero is someone who has given his or her life for something bigger than one self" says Nell Callaway.

But for David Murrell, this year's celebration has a new meaning.

"I have never saw so many people working behind the scenes you know to honor our veterans those whole have given there all you know it really has impacted me" says Murrel.

Murrels grandson is 20-year-old Lance Corporal Christopher Grant, who was killed while fighting in a battle in Afghanistan two weeks ago.

And now at veterans luncheons like the one held at Chase Bank. A moment of silence to remember Grant and all of the others who have lost their lives fighting for out country speaks louder than words.

Across town, a luncheon was also held at the Veterans Home in Monroe to show appreciation for those who are still with us.

"But today its about the Veterans and those that are stationed hear we are here just to applaud them and say thank you for all the sacrifices you made to give us the freedom to be here today" says Rodney Alexander.

For a grieving grandfather and the hundreds who share similar pain in their own way, nothing helps heal the heart like the support of our community
