Monroe mayor backs McAllister in 5th District race

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Republican congressional candidate Vance McAllister has picked up the backing of the third-place finisher in the 5th District race.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo, a Democrat, said Tuesday that he is endorsing McAllister in the Nov. 16 runoff against Republican Neil Riser.

Mayo told The Associated Press that McAllister, a political newcomer, appeared more open-minded and more willing to work across the political aisle in Congress.

The Monroe mayor says he believes Riser would be a divisive figure who is unwilling to build coalitions with Democrats to get things done in Washington.

Support from Mayo could be a boost to McAllister's campaign, helping him draw support from Democrats and independents in the race. Mayo is a well-known figure in the Monroe area, among Democrats and in the black community.
