City of Monroe speaks on the R. Kelly event.

Monroe, La (KNOE 8 NEWS)- Many fans still are confused as to what actually happened at the Monroe Civic Center when R. Kelly came to town. They assumed they would see and meet R&B singer. For Civic Center Director Charles Thomas and his staff, they were under some intense pressure to handle the situation.

"I was really scared for all of the workers here because the people were just visibly upset and I just felt so bad because people had confronted the Mayor of the City of Monroe," said Thomas.

Mayor Jamie Mayo was there and even took the stage to endorse 5th District Congressional candidate Vance Mcallister. Later when the show did not go the direction the crowd thought it should. Mayo took some verbal abuse.

Civic Center officials want to clear the city's name from any involvement in how the event was promoted.

"This was not a city event, we just rented out the facility," said Thomas.
