PINEVILLE, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Voters in Pineville acted overwhelmingly Saturday to allow restaurants in the city to sell alcohol, but it will still be months before diners can enjoy a drink with their meal.

The election gave Pineville the opportunity to loosen its restrictions on alcohol, but the City Council must still make any change official by ordinance.

Such an ordinance would be introduced at the Nov. 12 council meeting at the earliest, and voted on at the Dec. 10 meeting.

City officials sought and received approval from the state legislature to call the election as a means to spur development and as a measure against a potential future push for unrestricted alcohol sales.

The restaurant option is the only one city officials considered.
