Student journalist claims he was fired over Twitter posts

GRAMBLING, La. (KNOE 8 News) -A student journalist says he was fired from The Gramblinite after tweeting about poor conditions at the university.

Grambling State University's football team is no longer boycotting practice, but the controversy surrounding conditions in the athlete's weight room, may be far from over. David Lankster, online editor of The Gramblinite student newspaper, says he was fired over posts made on Twitter.

Lankster was in charge of the newspaper's web site and social media pages. Last week, he posted quotes from anonymous players on the football team. He says he posted their thoughts about the conditions of GSU, and about the boycott of practice and last week's football game.

Lankster says those tweets resulted in his termination from The Gramblinite. He says that Friday, he was contacted by other employees of the newspaper, and told he was being fired. Lankster says he never got the official word from the newspaper's advisor, Wanda Peters, so he continued to post on Twitter over the weekend. These tweets included pictures of the conditions of the football team's weight room.

Lankster says he was just doing his job as a journalist, and keeping the public informed.

"I feel like I should be able to speak out on that," says Lankster, "and if according to them I can't do that, or I'm wrong for doing that... then I don't want to be affiliated with Grambling journalism."

Lankster says he went into the newspaper office Monday morning to pick up his letter of termination, but was told his firing had been overturned. According to David Lankster, the newspaper advisor Wanda Peters, did not have the authority to fire him on her own, and did not follow the proper protocol. Lankster did not go back to work at the paper.
