VICKSBURG, Miss. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The U.S. Postal Service will place cluster mailboxes in Vicksburg residential areas and at retail centers in a measure meant to save time and costs.

Vicksburg Postmaster Bobby James told a civic club this past week that the cluster boxes contain up to 18 compartments for letters and parcels.

The first target area is neighborhoods west of Washington Street between Ameristar Casino and DiamondJacks Casino's operations center.

James says cluster boxes will be placed at retail centers and strip malls where carriers spend time walking between storefronts. A deal is also in the works to place the cluster boxes in downtown.

James says the boxes open with a key, allowing for more privacy and help prevent identity thieves from stealing mail.
