MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - A kindergartner has been suspended from Swayze Elementary after he brought a gun to school.

Ouachita Parish School Superintendent Bob Webber says the student took the air pistol to his teacher and told her that his mom told him to give it to his brother.

Webber said the teacher was unable to immediately determine whether the gun was an actual handgun.

She delivered the gun to the principal, who called police.

The air pistol was not loaded.

Webber said the district ruled there was no ill intent by the student. He will be allowed to return to school after a parent meets with the administration.

MONROE,La. (KNOE 8 News)- A four-year-old is suspended for taking a plastic gun to school.

Early this morning Katherine Burks received a phone call that no mother wants to receive.

Swazye Elementary School leaders called her saying their was an emergency with her four-year-old son.

"I'm like what's going on im thinking he done hurt himself real bad you know but they come telling me about a fake gun he done brought to school" says Burks.

According to Swazye Principle Dana Jenkins the child alerted his teacher that he had a gun in his back pack.

The teacher opens the back pack, saw the "air soft gun" and immediately took the back pack to the main office.

That's when Jenkins called Ouachita Parish Sheriffs deputies.

Jenkins also called the child's two siblings into her office to question them , after the 4-year-old is said to have told the teacher that his mother is the one who put the gun in his bag.

When we spoke to his mother she denies the allegations, saying it's nothing but a toy.

"anybody can look at this gun and say its a fake gun you know this should have been a warning not to bring a fake gun to the school" says Burks.

Burks tells us the school has suspended her son from school for 5 days.

"Suspended, a preschool student suspended. I never heard of that" says Burks.
