UPDATE:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) – A 13 year old student at Carroll Junior High School who brought and fired a gun Monday while in the school could face serious charges. The Monroe Police Department told KNOE the gun was stolen from the child's grandfather's house.

Fortunately no one was hurt when the shot was fired inside a bathroom at the school. Our Nolan Crane reports.

We have obtained a picture officers took of the gun fired in the bathroom at Carroll Junior High School Monday morning. The shot that was fired left a hole in a ceiling tile. A school employee heard the shot as it echoed down the hall. The gun was found in a pack back belonging to the 13 year old boy. Police say the gun was stolen from the child's grandfather's over the weekend. After about an hour on lock down the school day resumed for most of the students.

"I wanted to be here for my child and I didn't want her to continue on the rest of the day after like something like that had happened," said Clar Cinda Carter.

"There's a lot of people here checking their kids out and upset because they hadn't heard anything and they said this happened at about 9 something this morning," said Wilma Long.

Superintendent Brent Vidrine says parents were notified of the situation through an emergency alert system. Police say the 13 year old may have brought the gun to school to scare a bully or show it off.

Either case the 13 year old now faces several serious charges which include: "An illegal discharge of a firearm which is a felony, bringing a gun onto school property, which is also a serious charge. If he did intend to harm a couple of the kids or point it at them, we are still trying to determine this, there could be some aggravated assault charges involved in this," said Mark Johnson.

Monroe police are questioning all of the children who were in the restroom when the shot went off. While there are several unanswered questions. Police say the grandfather did not know the gun had been stolen. Police have also questioned the child's mother as they try to pin down the exact motive behind what happened here today.
