Consolidated recreation services considered in Vicksburg

Posted: Updated:

VICKSBURG, Miss. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. wants to meet with Warren County supervisors to discuss consolidating city and county recreation and naming a joint city-county board to oversee it.

No meeting date was set pending a response from the supervisors.

The city and county run separate recreation programs.

Officials say that the consolidation will save money and plan for future recreation projects.

Board of Supervisors president Bill Lauderdale says eliminating duplication of services is worth considering.

Lauderdale says the city and county discussed consolidating recreation in the 1990s, "but it never got off the ground."

Consolidation was briefly discussed in 2012 when former mayor Paul Winfield tried to get the county to help fund a sports complex, but the supervisors declined to participate.
