LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas finance officials are estimating nearly 1,600 employees whose positions are funded by the federal government will be furloughed next week if the government shutdown continues.

The Department of Finance and Administration on Friday said that it expects 1,594 employees to be furloughed starting Monday because of the shutdown that began Oct. 1. Hundreds had already been furloughed because of the budget standoff, but Gov. Mike Beebe told agencies this week that the state didn't have any more resources to cover other federal employees and programs.

Beebe earlier Friday said he expected about 1,460 state workers to be furloughed.

DFA said the number could still change as agencies review their grants and see whether they could use federal funds from past years to fund positions.
