Taking the sting out of flu season

Posted: Updated:

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 NEWS)- Some seniors were at the West Ouachita Senior Center hoping to take the sting out of flu season.

Several community agencies partnered to provide free flu shots to area seniors, since they are in a high risk category.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that seniors get a shot every year because of age and any other health related issues.

"I get a flu shot every year because I have diabetes and my doctor wants me to get a flu shot because that is a chronic disease and I could get the flu," Alice Minnifield said.

Senior Center Executive Director Jeanette Ellington says there is reason to be concerned for this age group.

"We want the seniors over age 65 to take a shot because the influenza virus spreads so easy with coughing, sneezing and just close contact," Ellington said. "Seniors over 65 sometimes have other diseases that can cause them to really be sick and sometimes have pneumonia or death"

For those seniors who were unable to get a shot today, it's not too late. The next Senior Flu Shot Day will be held next Wednesday on Oct. 16 at the Ouachita Council on Aging from 8:30- 11:30 a.m.
