MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont man considered one of the country's greatest deer hunters has died at age 89.

A funeral home says Larry Benoit died Tuesday at his home in Duxbury. The name Benoit has become synonymous over the past 40 years with deer hunting and the bagging of huge bucks.

Benoit wrote several hunting books and spent 25 years giving deer-hunting seminars nationwide. He is believed to have bagged more than 200 deer. The most recent was in November.

Scott Smolen is a farmer from Mondovi, Wis., who invited Benoit to that hunt last year on his land. He says Benoit "was the greatest deer hunter that ever walked the face of the Earth."

Benoit served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and spent decades working in construction.
