WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Texts messages were sent and even happy tears were shed by Jennifer Hanline after hard work from her and others in the smoke free effort has paid off.

West Monroe City Council has passed the smoke free air ordinance.

"Little tears of joy their I am very excited because I really think this is going to make a difference in our community and we are going to be a healthier community and healthier people" says Hanline.

West Monroe was the third and final vote needed after Monroe City Council said yes last month and Ouachita Parish Police Jury said yes Monday night to the smoke free air ordinance.

The ordinance will ban smoking in bars and bingo halls.

Including electronic cigarettes.

West Monroe City Council had the passing of the ordinance parish wide resting on their shoulders.

"We do not normally have a room full of people so a little bit of pressure but I think the council members thought about it for a long time" says West Monroe Mayor Dave Norris.

But it wasn't easy according to campaign manager Hanline.

"It is year of work its taken to get the proper education out to people and then of course introductions at 3 different meetings and then a public hearing and then of course the 3 votes" says Hanline.

The ordinance will go into effect the first week of January.
