Ouachita River boat crash update

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) – A Monroe man is being charged with DWI and was booked into jail. Agents at Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries say he caused a crash on the Ouachita River.

There were four people involved in the crash. There was one passenger each on a jet ski and the boat. Although there were people injured the Wildlife and Fisheries law enforcement division agents say it would have been worse, possibly even deadly. Luckily everyone wore their life jackets.

The jet ski is now smashed in and cracked.

"Frank Brussel was the operator of the personal watercraft. He made the maneuver in front of the bass boat that caused the accident. He was found to be under the influence of alcohol and he's been booked in the Ouachita Correctional Center," said Sgt. Wayne Parker.

The boat that got hit also took a beating. It capsized as a result of the collision. The vehicles might be damaged but it's the passenger's safety that officers and deputies were more worried about.

"The operator and passenger of the bass boat were taken to the hospital and treated and agents said they were expected to be released after treatment," said Parker.

Agents at the wildlife and fisheries say even though there might not be lines and lights, like there is when you drive your car. Determining who has the right of way could save your life and prevent accidents like these.

"Typically somebody has the right away even in a vessel. However, every boat operator should take whatever means necessary to avoid a collision," said Parker.

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says accidents like this one are actually happening less each year.

"We've had nine fatalities reported. 88 accidents all together and that number have continued to decrease each year since we've in acted our boating safety education program," said Parker.

Sergeant Parker says two of the passengers were 16 and 17 years old. Frank Brussel who is charged with causing the accident has bonded out of jail. The extent of his injuries are not known.
