E.A Conway renamed and under new management

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The transition we've heard about for months at E.A. Conway Medical Center in Monroe is in the books. There are several changes, from who now runs it and even the name. Our Nolan Crane was at Tuesday's ceremony.

What was once known as E.A. Conway is now going to be called University Health. The Bio Medical Research Foundation has spent several months bringing in staff to make the transition from a state run medical center to what will now be a non-profit hospital.

Employees and lawmakers were in attendance for the ceremony.

"We were in danger of losing this whole entire facility and the leadership of this community just said no, we're not going to lose. We're going to keep this facility. It's important to the people, not only of Monroe but the entire Northeast Louisiana," said Senator Mike Walsworth.

One of the changes you will soon notice is the name of the medical center. Although this marker remains in front, it will soon be replaced.

"This naming and branding is going to give the initiative to our employees that we have to change and we have to take care of our patients and our community and we have to give them the service they deserve," said John George.

One way the staff at the hospital says they are going to increase the level of care patients receive is because of the number of new employees they have hired and are planning to hire.

"We hired at this point approximately 50 people that are external to the hospital, that are new to the hospital. We processed the first group of those people today. We anticipate another 40-50 people that will be hired in the coming two to three weeks," said Rob Hartmann.

You might recall that all of the employees who were employed when the medical center was run and operated by the state had to re-apply for their jobs. The human resource director says only about 40 people chose to retire.
