Monroe & Ouachita Parish closer to smoke free air

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)-Smoke-free air may be on its way for the city of Monroe after a 3-2 vote by the Monroe City Council to pass the Smoke Free Air Ordinance.

Monroe City Council approved the ordinance that would ban smoking in all workplaces, including bars and bingo halls. The ban would also include the use of electronic cigarettes.

But in order for it to go into effect, the Ouachita Parish Police Jury along with the West Monroe City Council must pass the exact same amended ordinance.

Councilwoman Betty Blakes voted against the ordinance. She says the no vote came after the council amended the ordinance ,stating smokers must be 15 feet from all entrances.

Blakes believes this amendment to the ordinance may make it more difficult to for West Monroe and Ouachita Parish to pass it. Blakes says everyone had agreed to the ordinance, and making changes during the approval process could create stumbling blocks in all three government agencies passing the ordinance.

If the West Monroe City Council and the Ouachita Parish Police Jury also pass the Smoke Free Air Ordinance, it will go into effect January 2014.
