GULFPORT, Miss. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - An attorney has asked for bond for a man charged with weapons violations after authorities found a pipe bomb in a car at a state prison in Leakesville.

Scott Jenkins Waits wasn't in the car when the bomb was found June 1, but authorities say he was involved in making it. Prison officials say the bomb wasn't intended to be used against the facility.

Waits lawyer, John Weber, says his client should be released due to a medical condition and to protect his home from looting.

Another defendant, John Harberson, has pleaded guilty in the case.

Authorities say Harberson drove a woman to visit an inmate at the south Mississippi Correctional Institution and forgot the bomb was in the car.
