8th Annual Ouachita River Water Sweep

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Volunteers in Ouachita Parish hit the water this weekend for the 8th Annual Water Sweep.

The Keep Ouachita, Monroe, and West Monroe Beautiful organizations, along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hosted the clean-up event.

More than one hundred volunteers trolled the Ouachita River picking up debris. This year, there were some rather interesting finds. Crews founds tons of styrofoam, a fully intact mini-fridge, and even an antique bench.

Diane Golden with the Corps of Engineers, says it's not all trash.

"The tires we have to take to Greg Smith (Keep Ouachita Parish Beautiful)," says Golden, "These tires can be recycled, and many times they're what your children are playing on on the playground."

During last year's water sweep, crews collected more than seven tons of trash from the river and shoreline.
