Union Parish Sheriff lost battle with cancer

Posted: Updated:

UNION PARISH La. (KNOE 8 News) - Sad news out of Union Parish, a leader well-known by many, died Tuesday morning. Union Parish Sheriff Bob Buckley lost his battle with rectal cancer.

People from Union Parish painted a picture of the type of person Buckley was.

Bob Buckley was a well-liked Parish leader. He was Union Parish's Sheriff for more than 20 years.

But people in the community said, he was much more than that.

Evelyn Richard said she knew Buckley all her life, and he was an uncle to her.

"He was serious when he had to be serious, busy when he had to be busy, and fun when he had to be fun. You just couldn't meet a better person," said Richard.

Buckley died at his home Tuesday morning, after battling cancer since May.

Mayor Stein Baughman Jr. said he knew Buckley for a better part of 50 years.

"Bob was his own man, and Bob would want to be remembered as always wanting Union Parish to be a better and more safe place to live. And he was very Union Parish oriented, and at the same time he was very Louisiana oriented," said Mayor M. Baughman Jr.

Baughman said Buckley was very dedicated to law enforcement.

"He was president of the Sheriff's Association for the state and he always brought recognition to the parish," said Baughman.

And also, had a good sense of humor.

"Many times he was a prankster you know. He liked to joke with people. He was a little like my dad; He liked to joke with people and some people could joke with Bob, but not everyone," said Buckley.

Richard's said Buckley will not be forgotten.

"You just couldn't meet a better person. You just can't describe Uncle Bob. He's just good," said Richard's.

Buckley was 65, and worked in law enforcement all his life.

People in Union Parish said he was respected in so many different communities, and will be greatly missed.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Kilpatrick Funeral Homes.
