MONROE,La. (KNOE 8 News)- Thousands of northeast Louisiana families in need will be able to eat more balanced meals..

It's all thanks to a big donation that was given to the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana today.

Annmarie Sartor spends her days trying to find ways to stock the shelves so they can feed 12 parishes full of hungry families.

And for the food bank in Monroe its not everyday you get a a 40,000 pound donation protein foods.

"Protein is such a hot commodity and if you don't have enough food you certainly cannot afford to buy meats and so this donation is so important to feed people but to give them a protein filled option that they other wise are not going to have" says Sartor.

Brookshire grocery partnered with Smithfield as part of it's "Helping Hungry Homes" initiative.

About two dozen people were on hand to unload the delivery truck.

The food bank in Monroe feeds hungry people from 12 surrounding parishes and with such a large area of people to feed. Brook shire CEO Rick Ray ford knows how much this food bank can benefit from today's donation.

"We are excited about making this donate right here in Monroe because we see the real need for it here" says Rayford.

Annmarie Sartor like Rayford is excited about today's donation and the more than 160,000 families that will go a little less hungry thanks to Smithfield and Brookshires.
